What size tires do I need on my Pontoon boat trailer?

Pontoon boat trailer tires come in several different sizes and styles.

Let’s start with the basics.

Pontoon boat trailer tires can be radial or non-radial.

Radial Pontoon Boat Trailer Tires

Radial pontoon boat trailer tires wear longer than regular ply tires. They also have better traction, greater strength, improved stability, and less rolling resistance. Most models have two steel cord belts and two radial plies made of smooth polyester cords for added durability and stability.

Non-Radial Pontoon Boat Trailer Tires

Non-radial Pontoon boat trailer tires are designed for more extreme driving conditions. They are ideal for driving through rocks, snow, mud, sand, gravel, or dirt. However, they have little shock absorption.

Tire diameter:

If you will be doing a lot of long distance highway driving with your Pontoon boat in tow, you should choose Pontoon boat trailer tires with the largest diameter possible such as ST175/ 80D x 13”, these look like a regular automotive tire. They make fewer revolutions per minute (rpm) than boat trailer tires with small diameters, thus reducing wear and damage on the wheel bearings.

If you will not be doing a great deal of highway driving a 20.5 X 8 to 10” tire with an “E” load range will give you a very strong tire with a lower profile making it easier to load/ unload your pontoon boat at the ramp and still suitable for all of your Pontoon towing needs.

There usually is a choice for smaller Pontoon trailer tires such as a 5.30 x 12” D at a reduced price point. These tires are fine for lighter loads and shorter travel. But we would recommend either of the larger tires if it fits your budget.

Ply: Choose Pontoon boat trailer tires with a significant number of plys because they have stronger sidewalls and are generally more stable. Generally a “D” or “E” rating will meet your needs.
